The MM Episode

The present Monday Morning Team is entering into its fifth month of selfless service as the media body for the NITR crowd. And for the first known time, they are not having an issue. This Monday, MM goes unpublished. The institute bosses have clearly ordered so. That’s because they are furious at the MM group. They think MM’s earning the institute a bad name. And so they want every MM article ‘screened through SAC’ – as Prof. K. Parmanik puts it. ‘You can’t put all these news about hostels’ another of their statements. ‘You can’t go against NIT’; ‘we should have a meeting to decide what to and what not to publish in Monday Morning’.

I’ll tell you the mistakes that the so-called Monday Morning Team committed in this eventful period. There was this interview of Prof. K. K. Mohapatra where he had said that “NIT Rourkela is not a great institute” (which he later shamelessly denied to the acting director) in the 15th November issue – that was a genuine one. That shouldn’t have been published in the institute e-newsletter. They removed that part two days later. We even didn’t retaliate when the acting director so vilely accused us of concocting false stories. It was end semester time then.

What else – ‘Classroom Teaching at NITR’? ‘Black Waters of Homi Bhabha’? ‘Mr. Madhan’s Parthian Shot’? ‘Scapegoating not a solution’? ‘Ceiling Fan falls at GDB’ ? ‘First Reactions: Profs’ View on the Gate Tussle’? Or the numerous stories on VS Hall? Truth is that the admin has had problems with every such article that got published. Two clear reasons can be furnished for this. First – it showed their incapability. Second and the reason they point at the lovely MM guys – it did no good to their image. When I was a child I was taught in Moral Science about our ‘image’ in the society. Now once there’s a good image, good people look to maintain it. That’s the point – the admin are looking to save it. Demise starts there – when you look to save your image instead of maintaining it; instead of building on it. Good image is maintained by good deeds and not by hiding the bad ones.

The situation is quite the same in many institutes. Quite so and not so as well. We are at an advantage. We have a media body that does one part of the work – pointing where exactly things are going wrong, and where work needs to be done. True, we are not suffering. But on the flip side, we are. I’ll tell you, students of this NIT feel shame to invite their friends to the Tech Fest. Students do take a bath in a chilling Rourkela winter, but with a grumpy face. There are people who hardly ever bother the hostel mess. Make a list, and we can have an A4 filled. Fuck that, for we can’t do anything. For the top bosses, it ultimately boils down to one question, what is more important to them – their image in front of the outside world? Or the object, that is, the institute, the education, we the students?

I was talking to the ceramic HOD today and mentioned that MM was asked to stop publishing anymore articles and also mentioned the clauses placed by the SAC on its functioning. He was furious to know that…and said that this is not how a newsletter should be. Its only handful people that are deciding the course of MM as per their advantages.

All I can say that the British censored our media by the Vernacular Act, 1938..Then Indira Gandhi did it during Emergency.. And now the NITR admin…look what happened to others when they tried to take away the one of our fundamental right – “The right to speech and expression”..Also its a violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference, and impart information and ideas through any media regardless of frontiers”…
Lets show these assholes what we are capable of !!

    Friends,

I’m really proud of you juniors. But, please be careful. These guys may block wordpress, if it becomes popular.

If it is possible, please go to the meeting; and get it in writing from Pramanik, the reasons for censoring the newsletter. You’ll have solid evidence to put forth, when you send a letter to MHRD, pertaining to violation of the fundamental rights.

    All the best!!!
